California Deficit Swells to $34
Billion under Davis
Governor Gray Davis announced this
week that California's deficit will swell to a staggering $34.8 billion over
the next 18 months. To put this figure in perspective, the California
state deficit exceeds the entire general budget of every state but New York and
equals more than $1,000 per each of California's 34 million residents.
The Governor's top aides have already proposed various tax hikes despite the
fact that the state continues to hemorrhage cash through excessive and
irrational state spending programs. Over the past four years, the
Governor's spending spree has grown from $57 billion to $79 billion.
Congressman Gary Miller, a member of the U.S. House Budget Committee, has said
that tax and fee increases are not the answer to the state's budget woes, and
will work with state Republican leaders to fight all increases.
Congressional Delegation Intervenes in
Colorado Water Dispute
This week, Congressman Miller and
other members of the California congressional delegation asked Interior
Secretary Gail Norton that California receive a temporary exemption from
federal law requiring the state give up a portion of its Colorado River
use. To meet the current law, the state would have to relinquish 800,000
acre feet of water, or enough water to supply 1.68 million homes per year.
If granted, this extension will give California time to address its water
supply problems and formulate a long term solution.
